Updating Your Domain Settings

Make sure your mail gets delivered

Why do I Need to Update my Domain Settings?

In order for your services to work properly, some changes to your DNS settings are required. These settings are necessary for the delivery of email. Most email providers have become much stricter about the emails they accept, and now require specific settings from the domains sending them an email. If you're using your own domain with your Hushmail account, it's important you update your domain settings; otherwise, receiving email providers may reject the email you send from your Hushmail account or designate it as spam.

What Does This Mean for Me?

Email delivery is important to you. And your success is important to us. To make sure your inbound mail gets received properly, you'll need to set your MX records to Hushmail. To ensure outgoing email doesn't get marked as spam or be rejected, you'll need to add SPF, DKIM & DMARC records. But don't worry, we're going to walk you through it! We have specific instructions and videos for you below.

What Are MX Records?

Mail Exchanger (MX) records direct where email is delivered on the internet. These help ensure your mail is delivered and sent correctly.

What Are SPF Records?

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records are a type of TXT record which identify specific mail servers that have permission to send email for a domain. This helps prevent email spam by detecting email spoofing. These help phishing attacks and email deliverability.

What Are DKIM and DMARC Records?

DKIM and DMARC are strategies used to prevent domains from being hijacked by spoofing attempts. A DKIM record stores the public key used to verify an email's authentication, and must be set up for DMARC to be effective. DMARC prevents domains from being hijacked by using SPF and DKIM authentication to check and verify that the visible “from” header of an email matches the email address it’s actually from.
